A TEAM of cyclists is on the Continent for a challenge that will see them cover 1,000 miles.

The trio are raising money for the Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME) Association, which provides information, advice and support for sufferers.

For the members of Harborough based Cats Mountain Bike Club, the adventure began at the French port of St Malo and will end three weeks later at Bilbao in Spain.

Cats rider Mark Vines from Little Bowden, said: "We aim to average over 80 miles a day. And with the added weight of carrying all our equipment on the bikes it will be tough at times."

Mark, along with Rick Newham and Richard Pratt, decided to help raise money for the organisation after Mark's sister was diagnosed with the condition.

He believes that months of planning and training should enable the trio to cope with the challenge.

Mark said before leaving on Thursday: "We are all well prepared and looking forward to an exciting trip, and raising money for charity in the process." Proceeds will help fund a new ME Association research initiative that will start in the summer.

The total amount raised was £900.
